As a child, I remember my mother vividly telling me (always), “Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are”. I used to think that was an old wives’ tale and a way for your parents to keep you on the right path. Boy was I wrong, there are numerous variation to this saying such as:
“You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
“Surround yourself with people who have dreams, desire, and ambition; they’ll help you push for and realize your own.”
“Surround yourself with positive people who are going to push you toward greatness.”
“Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel, energies are contagious.”
You get the point…..Success doesn’t happen in a silo. There are numerous factors that weigh into your success. Hard work and dedication are always necessary, but your personal improvement leading up to your success can be greatly driven by other people.
The people you choose to surround yourself with impacts the way you think, act and feel daily. Surrounding yourself with the right type of people can help success come naturally than being around those who might hold you back.
That’s why “Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” is one of my favorite verses. Find people that make you feel uncomfortable and that will stretch you. Find people that will dream and take action with you. Find people who are curious, people with a positive outlook on life, people who are hard workers, people who you admire, people who have a stellar work ethic.
Like in everything in life, you’ll also have those that won’t understand you and will criticize you and what you are doing. That’s okay too! No two people are the same, same goes for your goals and dreams, they are yours for a reason. Run your own race and don’t settle because other people can’t see your vision and they do not understand your purpose. Your gifts are yours alone, don’t let anyone take that from you. Offer the world your special gifts and surround yourself with the right people to keep you moving towards progress daily.
